To identify and distinguish contemporary experiences of domination, it is necessary to use two analytical approaches. The first requires taking into account forms of domination that are perceived more and more openly as insurmountable constraints ; the second considers paradoxical expressions of domination, where domination is maintained through strange types of critical consent. The latter variety suggests the need to distinguish between two major mechanisms of subjective inscription : traditional forms of subjection, to which are added new « responsibilization » processes. Once these two analytic lines have been presented, it becomes possible to distinguish four main ideal-typical experiences of domination : inculcation, implosion, injunction, devolution.
