Organs gift giving : a typology
pp. 479-506
Organs gift giving is a commerce between human beings : this commerce entails a solidarity related to death. The purpose of this study is to disentangle the various forms of gift that are at work in this most modern form of gift. The nature of the organ, on the one hand, and immediate or delayed transplantation on the other, are instrumental for distinguishing gifts. However, the present situation of shortage has given raise to the multiplication of original forms of gift and has opened the door to financial incentives, whether the gift is an inter vivos or a post mortem gift. These recent developments in the field of transplantation are considered in term of pseudo-markets and the economy of exhortation. In conclusion, the study emphasizes the organizational nature of this modern gift giving process.
